AI Education Utopia

Many people are voicing concerns, warnings, and negative predictions about the future of #education as #ai becomes ubiquitous. In many ways, such fears and uncertainties about something so powerful and potentially invasive to values we hold dear about #learning, are understandable. We are all aware of dystopian predictions that Orwell's 1984, Cameron's Terminator, Asimov's I Robot, Wachowskis' The Matrix, Black Mirror episodes, and other media fiction have shown us. Likewise, we can all easily imagine that the ease with which #chatgpt can take away the need to think, to problem solve, and to learn, could lead to hellish situations in education as AI gets bigger and better.

But, what if the future of #AIEducation is utopian?

AI has already shown us in its current, crudest form that it has creative powers to represent images and text, sounds, video and animated forms. The #technology has already exposed us to its abilities in augmenting our ideas, supplementing tired minds, assisting struggling learners. In fields such as medicine, predictions, diagnosis, and data modeling are vastly improved with AI. Through rapid improvement cycles, AI will quickly become truly artificial general intelligence #AGI, equaling and then surpassing human thinking capacity.

Rather than fear the advancement of such digital intelligence, could such a mega-power offer every student fully #personalisedlearning where AI is an integral part? This could work like this:

  • Personal AI identifies the strengths and weaknesses in knowledge, skills, and dispositions of the student it works with.

  • Personal AI allows each student to set their own goals knowing the strengths and weaknesses of the student it is working with but as it is connected to the main system of the education provider, it understands the learning environment that the student is part of and the demands of that environment.

  • Personal AI monitors the students' vital signs, online activity, etc, and through interactions as a digital counselor, looks after their wellbeing, sending alerts to staff when there are indications that human intervention is necessary.

  • System AI houses data on all knowledge that can be learned and pedagogical approaches that can be used. This data can be mapped in a multitude of ways to create learnable content for any student.

  • System AI stores and validates student achievements and progress, analyzing data on cohorts and suggesting actions and interventions from teacher-project managers, teacher-facilitators, one-to-one and group tutors

  • The Inner Link between Personal AI and System AI provides students with the opportunity to choose what they want to learn and how they want to learn. It creates bespoke units of learning that cover the identified areas of learning needs and the abilities, skills, attitudes, values, and knowledge fed into the System AI model.

  • The Outer Link connects students to other learners elsewhere in the world that are studying similar units of learning in comparable ways, creating communities of learning and practice. AI within this, monitors interactions, communication, and collaboration. This ensures the safety of students but also enables AI assessment of these skills.

This is just a skeleton of ideas. I am sure that after a night's sleep, I could add much more and I invite anyone to contribute their ideas. What is important in my mind, is that we provide an alternate view to the bleak outlook that many are predicting. We are not necessarily doomed...
