From a cognitive standpoint, I’m very aware that you have no room for error in a picture book. Every word counts.

Summary

This literacy project enables students to design their own children’s picture book using AI image generators and a combination of AI chatbots, desktop publsihing software and their own writing. The concept of this project is that:

  • Students are not restricted by their artistic abilities in being able to create a literary and visual form

  • The story books are designed for a specific audience with specific needs. The students choice of images, prompts used, choices made and editing/rewording should be led by the intended audience

  • Students are able to combine AI and literary skills and demonstrate these skills to create a picture book where their own contributions are recognised in terms of manipulating AI tools, desktop publishing tools and in editing the choice and use of words to reflect their understanding of the content they are creating and the audience

Overview

Students are to:

  • Be provided examples of picture books and understand what makes a ‘good’ picture book (I found this helpful)

  • Be provided (or choose from list) with an audience (age) and purpose (improve counting)

  • Plan out ideas and come up with

    • Prompts that they will use with a chatbot to create the text for the book

    • Ideas for images and the prompts needed that will represent the text in the picture book

  • Use the created prompts with a chatbot to create a story for their picture book

  • Copy and paste the output from the chatbot into a Word document and change elements of the story to improve it until they are satisfied with the outcome

  • Use an AI image generator to create the key images

  • Iterate, changing the prompts until satisfied with the images created

  • Download all images

  • Use desktop publishing software to construct the picture book with an appropriate layout using the text and images created

Evidence

Students need to provide:

  • Chatbot prompts created and used

  • The output from the chatbot before any editing of text

  • Evidence of changes to text made and annotations to explain why

  • Image generator prompts created and used including iterations

  • Final picture book

Tools

This project is envisioned to use:

  • AI Chatbot - Claude

  • Word processor - MS Word

  • AI Image Generator - Adobe Firefly

  • Desktop publishing software - Adobe InDesign

Possible adaptions & variations

This project could be modified according to what you want to assess. This could see the need for evidence reduced, for example around image prompting. It could also be modified to have chatbots not used, used for ideation only or for refining student created text.

There is no need to use the tools specified above and the book can easily be created in Word or PowerPoint.

The project could be enhanced with use of AI generated songs to accompany the picture book using tools such as Suno AI.
