Now, YOU can create cartoon versions of your favorite movies
— Victor Wendt

Summary

Inspired by the marvellous work of Victor Wendt, this project provides opportunities to look at involving AI tools for the Year 9&10 Media Arts curriculum looking at the achievement standard:

Students use media arts concepts to construct representations and communicate ideas, perspectives and/or meaning.

It is intended to look specifically at:

  • AC9AMA10D01 -experiment with ways to construct representations that reflect ideas, perspectives and/or meaning, and/or use of media conventions, media languages and media technologies,

  • AC9AMA10C01 - design and structure media arts works that examine and communicate ideas, perspectives and/or meaning.

Key Questions:

  • How does a depiction of film style/genre affect perceptions and expectations of a film?

  • How can a image representing a scene from a film be used to attract specific audiences?

Overview

Students are to:

  • Select a well known film and a scene that represents the film’s key message and/or the character(s)

  • Find a static image online that shows that scene, download or screenshot that image

  • Decide on a film style that is different from the original

  • Upload the saved image to a chatbot with image generation facilities or a specific AI image generator

  • Write prompts to recreate a new version of the image in a different style

  • Iterate until the new version is as intended

  • Provide evidence of the new image, prompts used and reflections on their work to answer the key questions

Possible adaptions & variations

This project could be modified to recreate scenes using AI text-to-video tools such as Pika or more traditional video editing tools where images generated by AI are compiled and edited to form a dynamic, video trailer.
